Interrogating The City of Leeds

The 2nd Year's have been out and about in the last week as part of their new Creative Strategies brief ' Interrogating the City'.

On Tuesday 16th October Bryan Davies escorted us to see 'Hello Friends', the sculpture he and Laura Davies have made for the new Bridgewater Place development.

On Wednesday 17th October they spent the day with visiting lecturer Dinu Li. Dinu presented some of his past projects, commissions and residencies in the studio and then the group de-camped to 42 New Briggate, the gallery space co-run by 2nd year tutor, Lucy Gibson and Art and Design graduate Yvonne Carmichael.

Here there was a chance to look at Dinu's current exhibition, 'The Mother of All Journeys' before being set a task to work in the city for the afternoon.

Everyone was asked to choose one word in response to the exhibition and then apply this word to a personal experience of the city. Each student had a digital camera and was asked to choose one image at the end of the day which summed up their activities. All sorts of creative endeavour was employed - from stalking passers-by, to finding houses parent's lived in as students, to retracing first steps in the city, to re-visiting old halls of residences, and even going home to Bradford and back in 2 1/2 hours.

LIGHT NIGHT Leeds extravangaza THIS friday...

Light Night is THIS Friday 12th October. Packed with events all through the city centre from the University down to the river waterfront and with Black Dog's Bondage on the Streets to guide you from venue to venue! There will be street games, art, opera, dancing, music, films - I doubt Leeds will know what's hit it.

Chronicle of a Dream Foretold is a video work made by Dinu Li during a residency in Kazakhstan for the Central Asian Project. It blurs the boundaries between documentary and fantasy. Inspired by Jean-Luc Goddard’s 1960’s film of The Rolling Stones’ rehearsing their song Sympathy for the Devil it shows a Kazakh rock band as they rehearse their latest song ‘Dreams’. This is combined with scenes such as footage of young men training to become equestrians, the flickering of images from a television set, time lapse footage of light passing through a snow covered landscape and montages of still photographs.

Central Asian Project is a collaborative exchange organised by Cornerhouse (Manchester), SPACE (London), and AsiaArt+ (Almaty, Kazakhstan) dedicated to forging new links between the UK and Central Asia.

‘Chronicle of a Dream Foretold’ will be screened only on Light Night at 42 New Briggate, Leeds. Dinu Li’s exhibition ‘The Mother of All Journeys’ runs from September 18th to November 10th in the gallery

Cult Fiction: Art and Comics

To accompany Opera North’s production of Madama Butterfly

The Mother of all Journeys is an exploration by second generation British Chinese artist Dinu Li into the memories of his 80-year-old mother. Through a series of colour photographs Li charts her journey from China to England.

42 New Briggate is an initiative by Opera North Projects to unite contemporary visual art and opera.

It is curated by Yvonne Carmichael (Art and Design interdisciplinary graduate 2006) and Lucy Gibson (Art and Design Interdisciplinary Lecturer).

Degree show 2007

Bhav Shah is crafting away in Alicia Talikowska's installation 'Retoyed Trash' as part of this years degree show. The octopus behind him emerged from a previous workshop for Situation Leeds festival at the Art Market in Merrion Centre. Alicia has been busy since the show running workshops at the Moor Music festival and Innocent Village Fete in Regents Park, London. See her blog for more details:

Cannonball

16th – 21st July 2007, 12- 7pm.

Rose Thompson has been invited to exhibit her degree show project The Passage of Time as part of Cannonball at 42 New Briggate Gallery.

'Rose creates artist’s books that combine the processes investigating time and movement. Her books are abstract interpretations about her experience of walking, providing a true insight for the viewer to see and touch. Rose's book will be available in the 42 New Briggate shop for the summer following Cannonball.'

'To launch the Summer program of exhibitions and events taking place at 42 New Briggate Gallery, Cannonball will bring together a range of work from the Leeds' art institutes including Leeds College of Art and Design, Leeds Metropolitan University and The University of Leeds, with artists recently graduating from Foundation level through to MA.This will be a rare chance to experience work from across the Leeds art school board in the same place at the same time. Marvel at the sight of cross-course inter-pollution unfolding before your eyes. Enjoy the rarity of college-ites' and post grads' art works sitting side by side. This dynamic interplay will provide a fresh context for the works and act as a small but overdue step towards linking the institutions of Leeds.For the artists involved the exhibition presents an opportunity to expand on, rework or re-present the practice they have developed during study, facilitating a continuation of activity post art-education rather than travelling tumbleweeds and office jobs.'

Works will include performative wall drawings, sleepy photography, sado-masochistic paper works, noisy sawdust, book-works, interactive birds, index fingers and a bench. Exhibiting artists include: Fran Burrows, Ailsa Burrows, Larna Campbell, Mark Madden, Rachel Jesse, Jane Liggins, Tim Pulleyn, Rose Thompson and the MA collective, CAST.

42 New Briggate Gallery is a space set up by Lucy Gibson and Yvonne Carmichael who are both involved with the art & deign course. Lucy teaches in second year and coordiantes the SOrell Young Designers Programme and Yvonne graduated in 2006. The gallery is run in conjunction with Opera North Projects and has played host to four exhibitions so far which coincided and connected with Opera North's Productions.
