I’m for an art that does more than sit on its ass.

The quote (although if you check Oldenbergs’ ‘manifesto list’ from 1961, which says it slightly differently), has been mentioned in an International Institution of objects, The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which is currently hosting an exhibition titled: Out of the Ordinary: Spectacular Craft.

Out of the Ordinary: Spectacular Craft, brings together the work of eight contemporary “artists” who place craft at the heart of their practice: Olu Amoda, Catherine Bertola, Annie Cattrell, Susan Collis, Naomi Filmer, Lu Shengzhong, Yoshihiro Suda and Anne Wilson.

The exhibition aims to explore:

“…….crafts condition in the 21st Century, particulary cases in which making ‘by hand’ is interwoven with new technologies, unorthodox modes of authorship and contemporary display contexts.”

In terms of Interdisciplinarity this exhibition is key. The exhibition and surrounding debate situates craft practice amongst and across an array of theories and interest groups; each colliding, overlapping and sharing ideas of what craft is and why it is important.

This is craft talking to the world rather than craft talking to itself - not separate, as is so often the case, but fully engaged in the world.

The exhibition continues until -17 February 2008 and is FREE!

Collaborative Strategies Blog

2nd year Art and Design Interdisciplinary students have just begun working on the Collaborative Strategies Module. A Blog site has been created for the Module and will act as a collaboratively formed resource, providing a platform for the sharing of information, ideas, work in progress, event launches.....................with contributions from 2nd year students and staff.

With work ranging from fi lm, photography, new media, painting and sculpture. the four short listed artists for this year’s prize were selected by a jury chaired by Nigel Walsh, Curator of Exhibitions at Leeds Art Gallery, comprising Greville Worthington, independent curator and art collector; Tom Lubbock, art critic
for The Independent; Ann Gallagher, Head of Collection, British Art, Tate and Turner-prize winner Martin Creed, from a long-list of 24 artists put forward by 12 nominators throughout the region. The Northern Art Prize will be awarded on 17 January 2008 with a fi rst prize of £16,500; the remaining three runners up will each receive £1,500.

Morethanroughandlonely: A display of photographs taken on disposable cameras by members of the homeless community in Leeds.
A demonstration of suitable locations.
A presentation of previous inhabitations.
A documentation of last night.
A proposal for tomorrow.

Jennifer has asked members of the homeless community in Leeds to document areas of the city that they find hospitable with the aim of producing a guide to temporary nocturnal accommodation outside of traditional lodgings. Photographs, sketches, found objects, gifts, narratives, opinions and ideas from the contributors will be displayed in the window of 42 New Briggate Gallery as a continuously updated archive.

From Wednesday 14th November 42 New Briggate will be hosting a brand new series of residencies.

Artists were invited to put forward proposals for how they would use the gallery space to make work that is visible in or through the gallery’s large front window. Everyone is most welcome to peer in and watch the successful artists at work and play.

A Conference for The Glass Archive

The Glass Archive is a collection of over eighty novels containing the word ‘glass’ in the title. For A Conference for The Glass Archive, five individuals including artists George Henry Longly, Kate Allen & Chris Henry Clarke, and freelance writer Anna Taylor, have been invited to investigate and make personal responses to the content of the archive.
Taking place over four days, A Conference for the Glass Archive will provide daily public access to The Glass Archive, daily one-hour readings (from four novels over four days) and culminate in the delivery of five presentations on Saturday 1st December at 2pm.
A Conference for The Glass Archive encourages a shift of focus in our understanding of this material. The project sits within a wider context of material investigation, in which sculptors and artists explore emotional and intellectual connections to physical materials.

Interrogating The City of Leeds

The 2nd Year's have been out and about in the last week as part of their new Creative Strategies brief ' Interrogating the City'.

On Tuesday 16th October Bryan Davies escorted us to see 'Hello Friends', the sculpture he and Laura Davies have made for the new Bridgewater Place development.

On Wednesday 17th October they spent the day with visiting lecturer Dinu Li. Dinu presented some of his past projects, commissions and residencies in the studio and then the group de-camped to 42 New Briggate, the gallery space co-run by 2nd year tutor, Lucy Gibson and Art and Design graduate Yvonne Carmichael.

Here there was a chance to look at Dinu's current exhibition, 'The Mother of All Journeys' before being set a task to work in the city for the afternoon.

Everyone was asked to choose one word in response to the exhibition and then apply this word to a personal experience of the city. Each student had a digital camera and was asked to choose one image at the end of the day which summed up their activities. All sorts of creative endeavour was employed - from stalking passers-by, to finding houses parent's lived in as students, to retracing first steps in the city, to re-visiting old halls of residences, and even going home to Bradford and back in 2 1/2 hours.

LIGHT NIGHT Leeds extravangaza THIS friday...

Light Night is THIS Friday 12th October. Packed with events all through the city centre from the University down to the river waterfront and with Black Dog's Bondage on the Streets to guide you from venue to venue! There will be street games, art, opera, dancing, music, films - I doubt Leeds will know what's hit it.

Chronicle of a Dream Foretold is a video work made by Dinu Li during a residency in Kazakhstan for the Central Asian Project. It blurs the boundaries between documentary and fantasy. Inspired by Jean-Luc Goddard’s 1960’s film of The Rolling Stones’ rehearsing their song Sympathy for the Devil it shows a Kazakh rock band as they rehearse their latest song ‘Dreams’. This is combined with scenes such as footage of young men training to become equestrians, the flickering of images from a television set, time lapse footage of light passing through a snow covered landscape and montages of still photographs.

Central Asian Project is a collaborative exchange organised by Cornerhouse (Manchester), SPACE (London), and AsiaArt+ (Almaty, Kazakhstan) dedicated to forging new links between the UK and Central Asia.

‘Chronicle of a Dream Foretold’ will be screened only on Light Night at 42 New Briggate, Leeds. Dinu Li’s exhibition ‘The Mother of All Journeys’ runs from September 18th to November 10th in the gallery
