At the invitation of Olsen, Mud Office have programmed an afternoon of films and television broadcasts accompanied by food, drink and live music. The screening will combine Mud Office's recent series of video broadcasts with fragments of nature documentaries and films including Joseph Cornell's BY NIGHT WITH TORCH AND SPEAR, and Fischli and Weiss' THE RIGHT WAY.

Formed in 2005, Mud Office is a collaboration between artists Dan Robinson (Leeds), and Charlie Jeffery (Paris). The way they work and the things they produce, result from the specific contexts they are invited to work in and the resources that can be found there. Their previous work has involved forming a band, establishing a temporary cafeteria, manufacturing furniture, making architectural interventions and turning a hunt cabin into a broadcast studio.

'Blueprints' Exhibition at Deda/Derby 29th March – 30th April

 

'We live our daily lives in a constant exchange with the set of daily appearances surrounding us – often they are very familiar, sometimes they are unexpected and new, but always they confirm us in our lives. They do so even when they are threatening: the sight of a house burning, for example, or a man approaching us with a knife between his teeth, still reminds us (ungently) of our life and its importance. What we habitually see confirms us…. Yet it can happen, suddenly, unexpectedly, and most frequently in the half-light of glimpses, that we catch sight of another visible order which intersects with ours and has nothing to do with it.’

‘Blueprints establishes the staring into the everyday, it focuses on the point of the body in space and it attempts to still and quiet the body whilst acutely aware of sensation. These Blueprints, ‘half light glimpses’ of the everyday body in space; between place and space. The reduction of line is used to create a graphic scoring of the body in space. It is this scoring that establishes the blueprint by which to create large scale pieces of work. The graphic line is an attempt to complete a notation of the body in space at once universal and absurd. Two singular concerns arise in this scoring; that of movement and that of sound, yet the line by its very nature stills this and fixes it as notation. For this reason the connection with the musicians’ tradition of graphic scoring is demonstrated within the images as the body recognises pulsation and resonance as both movement and sound in space. Thus the body is merely shadow that reverberates as energy in space underscored by a line.' Joanna Geldard

“My current art making practice explores the dilemma of what it means to inhabit a female body. I create installations and individual works that contain multiple layers of meaning; the work is subtle and surprising, disturbing and amusing. I alter and adapt ready-made objects that stand in as signifiers for the maternal body. I cast objects in unusual or unsuitable materials with the intention of suggesting an alternate reading of the original object. My intention is to promote in the viewer a complex response encompassing the cultural, political, social, historical and mythological agendas that inform our current perspective on motherhood and its role in contemporary society.”

Flocking is the process of depositing many small fiber particles (called flock) onto a surface by the means of an electrically charged ‘gun’, the technique fires coloured fibres at a glued surface or object, to create a soft textured finish... more

Art event on Thursday 1st March in an empty space in Leeds City Centre. Artists in Leeds are often asked to be creative when thinking about sites to respond to and ways to present their work. In addition there is a tradition of individuals sustaining a creative practice by working collectively or collaboratively. Art in Unusual Spaces would like to celebrate and unpick this by inviting film and publication submissions of new or existing work in response to theme of work, play, collaboration, collectivity, domestic and commercial spaces.
